This Privacy Policy describes how the Redscar mobile application (“Redscar”, “the App”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use our services.

1. Purpose of the Application

Redscar is a mobile application developed within the framework of scientific research projects aimed at supporting the detection and monitoring of potential surgical wound infections using images.

The App is intended for use by patients participating in authorized clinical studies under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals. It does not replace medical diagnosis or professional healthcare services.

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Personal Data

  • Email address (used solely for account creation and authentication).

2.2 Health-Related Data

  • Images of surgical wounds (abdominal region).

Users are instructed to capture only images of the wound area. However, images may contain personal data if misused (e.g., inclusion of identifiable features such as the face). In such cases, these images are reviewed and deleted.

3. Legal Basis for Processing

  • User’s informed consent provided outside the App as part of participation in the clinical study.
  • Acceptance of this Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions during registration.
  • Compliance with legal and ethical requirements for scientific research.

All study participants sign an informed consent form prior to using the App.

4. How We Use Your Data

  • Monitoring and follow-up of patients under clinical supervision.
  • Scientific research, including development and training of artificial intelligence algorithms.
  • Publication of scientific results.
  • Improvement of the application and related services.

All images are manually reviewed. If any image contains inappropriate or identifiable personal information, it is deleted.

Data used for research purposes is anonymized.

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure

Your data is not shared with third parties for commercial purposes.

Data is stored using Google Firebase, which acts as a data processor. All data:

  • Is stored in servers located within the European Union.
  • Is encrypted both in transit and at rest.

Access to the data is strictly restricted to authorized research personnel from the Universitat de les Illes Balears. Healthcare professionals involved in the study do not have direct access to stored data through the App.

6. International Data Transfers

No international data transfers are performed. All data is stored and processed within the European Economic Area (EEA).

7. Data Retention

Personal data is retained for the duration of the research study (currently expected until approximately 2030, subject to extension) and while the user account remains active.

Email addresses are used only for account management and are not included in research datasets.

All research data is anonymized whenever possible.

8. Data Deletion

Users have the right to request deletion of their personal data at any time.

Upon receiving a valid request:

  • Data will be permanently deleted within a maximum period of 30 working days.
  • Deletion is irreversible.

Certain data may be retained if required by law or for legitimate research purposes, in anonymized form.

9. Data Security

  • Secure communication via HTTPS.
  • Encryption of data at rest and in transit (Google Firebase).
  • Access restricted to authorized research personnel only.

10. App Permissions

  • Camera: to capture images of surgical wounds.
  • Storage: to store images locally before upload.
  • Internet access: to securely transmit data to servers.

11. Use by Minors

The App is intended exclusively for adult participants. Minors are not permitted to use the App.

12. Your Rights (GDPR)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to:

  • Access your personal data.
  • Request rectification of inaccurate data.
  • Request deletion of your data.
  • Restrict or object to processing.
  • Request data portability.
